DJI Neo 2 vs Flip vs Mini 4K for Schools and STEM Programs (2026)
Schools keep asking for a sub-$500-class DJI that students can actually fly. Three current models fit: Neo 2 for palm take-off and AI tracking, Flip for a protected folding frame, Mini 4K for a traditional remote and longer endurance. Here is how we spec them on education quotes.
Quick comparison
| Neo 2 | Flip | Mini 4K | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take-off weight | 249 g class | 249 g class | 249 g |
| Camera | 1/2" 48 MP · 4K/60 | 1/1.3" 48 MP · 4K/60 HDR | 1/2.6" 12 MP · 4K/30 |
| Flight time (rated) | ~23 min | ~31 min | ~31 min |
| How students launch it | Palm / gesture / RC | Fold-out spokes, then RC | Classic RC take-off |
| Indoor-friendly | Yes, short hops | Best of the three (frame protects props) | Needs more space |
| Best classroom use | Tracking, media, demo days | Intro flight in a gym | Photo, mapping modules, clubs |
DJI Neo 2 — demo days and media electives
The DJI Neo 2 is the one we put on a principal's desk. Students can launch it from a palm, follow a subject and land without a long pre-flight. That makes it excellent for a 40-minute period. It is not the aircraft we spec for mapping labs: endurance and a conventional controller matter more there. Published dealer pricing is on the product page.
DJI Flip — the gym drone
The DJI Flip folds into a protected spoke frame. That is the practical difference for indoor STEM: fewer bent props, fewer "who hit the bleachers" tickets. Camera and flight time sit above Neo 2. If the program lives in a gym or cafeteria, Flip is the default on our education quotes.
DJI Mini 4K — the syllabus drone
The DJI Mini 4K is the conventional trainer: remote, 4K video, ~31 minutes, 249 g. It is also the least expensive current Mini we list with a full remote. Use it when the rubric includes composition, flight planning or a simple orthomosaic. Step up to DJI Mini 5 Pro only if the same kit has to produce client-grade stills.
What a school quote should include
- Aircraft + the controller you actually need (do not buy a second RC 2 if the lab already owns one).
- Spare batteries and propellers — classrooms kill batteries faster than weekend pilots.
- DJI Care Refresh on the invoice so a crash is a service event, not a board agenda item.
- A one-page SOP: VLOS, no over-crowds, staff Part 107 / RPAS certificate where required.
US educational flights still sit under FAA rules; Canadian boards follow Transport Canada. We are an authorized dealer — confirm us on DJI.com — and we invoice POs. Send headcount, indoor vs outdoor, and ship-to on WhatsApp or [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions
Which DJI drone is best for a high-school STEM lab?
Mini 4K if you want a conventional controller and 30-plus minutes of flight for mapping or photography modules. Flip if you need propeller guards built into the airframe for indoor gyms. Neo 2 if the lesson is gesture take-off, tracking and short social-media clips.
Do US schools need Part 107 to fly these?
Recreational educational use has its own FAA path, but many districts treat any flight that produces curriculum deliverables as civil/commercial and require a Part 107 certificate on staff. Confirm with your district's risk office. In Canada, follow Transport Canada RPAS rules and your school board's policy.
Can you invoice a school purchase order?
Yes. ASI Computer issues business invoices, can process tax-exempt paperwork for qualified accounts, and ships with tracking. Send the PO contact and ship-to on WhatsApp or email.
Is Mini 5 Pro overkill for a classroom?
Often yes on price. Spec Mini 5 Pro when the program also does paid or competition work that needs the newer camera. For a 10-pack intro lab we usually quote Mini 4K or Flip.
